Geoimaging Brings Climate-Neutral Island Scenarios to Life Through Virtual Reality in the CO2 PACMAN Project
As the Interreg Euro-MED CO2 PACMAN project reaches its successful conclusion, Geoimaging proudly reflects on its role in transforming innovative climate-neutral landscape scenarios into immersive Virtual Reality experiences that enable citizens, stakeholders, and decision-makers to better understand the future of sustainable Mediterranean islands.
Working closely with the University of Florence, Geoimaging recreated the proposed landscape intervention scenarios for the project’s three pilot islands—Brač (Croatia), Elba (Italy), and Crete (Greece)—as fully interactive VR experiences. The virtual environments allowed users to explore realistic representations of future landscapes featuring renewable energy solutions, nature-based interventions, and climate-neutral development strategies from a first-person perspective. Each island featured its own tailored vision: Elba showcased photovoltaic installations in former mine areas alongside floating wind turbines; Brač presented agrivoltaic systems combined with on-land wind turbines; and Crete explored a floating photovoltaic installation on a dam together with a redesigned photovoltaic parking area in port zones.
Rather than simply presenting technical plans, the VR applications translated complex landscape proposals into engaging, accessible experiences. Participants could virtually walk through future scenarios, compare interventions, and gain a deeper understanding of how different climate actions could shape their local environment.
The experiences were showcased during the “The Island I Would Like” Living Labs, where local communities, public authorities, students, and stakeholders had the opportunity to experience the proposed transformations firsthand. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with participants highlighting how Virtual Reality made the scenarios easier to understand, encouraged meaningful discussions, and supported participatory decision-making. The immersive nature of the applications helped bridge the gap between scientific planning and community engagement, allowing citizens to visualize changes that would otherwise remain abstract.

To further promote climate awareness through interactive technologies, Geoimaging also developed the CO2 PACMAN Minigame, an educational game designed to communicate key sustainability concepts in a fun and accessible way, playable on both PCs and smartphones. Inspired by the project’s climate-neutral landscape scenarios, the game combines exploration, coin collection, portal-based quizzes, and interactive challenges that introduce players to the sustainable interventions proposed for the three pilot islands.
