3D Laser scanning of an old heritage house in Nicosia
Over the last few years, all the more restoration works on old historical houses have being carried out in Cyprus, with the ultimate goal of taking advantage and re-using them for residential purposes. This is also the case for an old building situated in the old city of Nicosia, which will get restored in order to get repurposed into a residential house.
The first and foremost step in restoration projects is the detailed documentation of the building as it is. In order to achieve highly detailed documentation, the use of 3D laser scanning is essential. This is due to the fact that 3D laser scanning allows us to capture in full all the detail of existing buildings at a level of precision that is very difficult and time-consuming to accomplish using other surveying methods.
Thus, Geoimaging ltd was assigned to offer our high-tech 3D laser scanning services in order to achieve accurate and detailed plans. More specifically we were asked to scan the interior and exterior of this old house. Our final deliverables were the two floor plans of the building, elevations, cross sections, a 3D point-cloud model and a 360 virtual tour.
The documentation we provided showed the full level of irregularity of a historic building; rooms are seldom anywhere near square, floors are rarely level, walls never have a consistent width etc. All this information of the existing condition allowed architects, as well as other engineers and interior designers to repair, plan, redesign and approve with actual measurements.
